The Legend of St. Nicholas A Story of Christmas Giving

By Dandi Daley Mackall
This is a cute Christmas book. It takes you back in the 60/70s or so with a young boy going shopping with his father. He is only thinking of himself until he hears the store Santa telling of the Legend of St. Nicholas. I love how the story ties into Nicholas' parents taking him to the Holy Land to learn of Jesus' birth. Then after he is left with a lot of money and trying to find his purpose in life, he decides to secretly bless his friends on the best day ever, the birthday of Jesus. His friends think it is truely a blessing from God. Also in the story, when he can't find his way, he prays and God shows him the direction. I love these little lessons that we can teach our children. The pictures are great and realistic. It is set way back in the years that one of his friends talk about how her sisters can't marry because her parents don't have money to pay their dowries. This is something I don't think a young person can understand. I change it up and say they can't afford the wedding. At the end of the story, the boy is ready to go buy gifts for his family and friends and has found the real reason for Christmas - blessing others! My 5year old has wanted me to read this book every night for a week. I would reccomend this Christmas book.
